CUMMING, Ga. -

A Butts County man is now charged with murder in connection with the death of his girlfriend's 3-year-old son in Forsyth County.

The Forsyth County Sheriff's Department initially charged 25-year-old Christopher Truett with cruelty to children and reckless conduct, but Sheriff Duane Piper says those charges were upgraded Friday to felony murder, malice murder and aggravated assault. The charges came after a preliminary report from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Wyatt Pruitt died from blunt force trauma.

The child was pronounced dead Tuesday after Truett said he found the child unresponsive at the mother's home.

Truett's mother, Susan Truett, says her son told her that a dog knocked the child down a set of stairs. She says her son would never harm a child.
