Police say a man who had been recently fired as a security guard shot the manager of the New Plaza Motel before turning the gun on himself while fleeing authorities.

The shooting happened early Tuesday inside the St. Petersburg motel's office. Arriving officers found Jerome Horacek with a gunshot wound to his upper torso.

They also saw the suspect running from the scene. The Tampa Bay Times reports a K-9 tracked the man to a nearby vacant lot, where he had apparently fatally shot himself.

Officials say Horachek's wounds are not life-threatening.

According to police, the security guard had recently received an eviction notice from the motel where he had been employed. His name has not been released.

An investigation is continuing.
