Crews battle blaze at Westside home

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It took 20 fire units to contain a house fire on the Westside Thursday evening.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department and the Clay County Fire Rescue received a call just after 7:30 p.m. in reference to fire at a home on Walden Road.

About 20 fire units responded to the scene and the CCFR had three units with one battalion chief to help fight the fire.

JFRD said it had a difficult time getting the fire under control due to the construction involving the house. There was also an add-on to the home, which made it difficult.

News4Jax talked to Jimmy Martin, a neighbor who called the fire rescue about the blaze.

"The smoke was so bad you couldn't go inside. We tried to go inside to see what we could scavenge, but you couldn't get in there, it was so hot," said Martin.

One man lives at the home, but was not inside at the time of the fire.

JFRD said the home is a total loss.

It's unknown what caused the fire, and the state fire marshal is investigating.
