DELTONA, Fla. – Children trick-or-treating Thursday night in a Deltona neighborhood got a rude surprise when a 63-year-old man answered the door in a robe that exposed his genitals, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.

And when a deputy was dispatched to the house on Deed Circle to investigate, the same thing happened to him.

Now, John Vowels is facing two counts of lewd or lascivious exhibition.

The Sheriff's Office received the complaint about Vowels just before 9 p.m. on Halloween. The victims, two brothers ages 12 and 14, were trick-or-treating in the neighborhood when some other kids pointed out Vowels' house and told the brothers to be careful because there was a naked man there, deputies said.

The boys didn't believe them and decided to trick-or-treat at the house. When Vowels came to the door, he was wearing an open robe that exposed his genitals and chest, deputies said.

The boys ran away, and when they got home, they told their father what had happened and he contacted the Sheriff's Office to report what happened.

When the deputy went to Vowels' home to investigate the complaint, he looked through a window and saw a naked Vowels sitting on a couch. When he came to the door, Vowels was wearing a white bathrobe and his genitals were exposed, deputies said.

The deputy also noted that he could smell alcohol on Vowels' breath and he was slurring his speech so badly that he was hard to understand.

Vowels acknowledged that he may have answered the door to trick-or-treaters in his robe and said he offered them money because he didn't have any Halloween candy, deputies said.

Vowels was taken into custody and booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach.
