Doctor accused of $7M Medicare fraud scheme

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A central Florida doctor has been indicted on accusations in a $7 million Medicare fraud scheme dating back to the mid-2000s.

Dr. David Pon has facilities in Orlando and Leesburg, but the company that was paying the false claims, First Coast Service Options, is in Jacksonville.

Federal prosecutors said Pon and others in his group made false diagnoses of eye disease in patients they said would go blind if they didn't get treatment.

In some cases, that treatment was never provided, but claims were filed anyway.

The indictment also alleges Pon wrote sham medical notes to cover up the scheme.
