Doctor offers tips to avoid Halloween makeup horrors

It's fun to paint your face for Halloween, but make sure your makeup doesn't harm your skin.

Dr. Melissa Piliang, a dermatologist at Cleveland Clinic, said skin reactions to face paints and makeup are not uncommon.

"Some people can be allergic to the ingredients in makeup, so they can put it on and they will get an itchy rash, or a blistery rash, or a rash that might look like poison ivy," Piliang said.

If you're using a makeup for the first time, Piliang recommended dabbing a little on your skin first to see if it will react.

You should use products manufactured specifically for the face and avoid using glitter, nail glue and markers, because they may be hard to remove.

If your makeup has a bad smell, do not use it because it may be contaminated.

Piliang said often people will put on too much makeup for a Halloween party or put it on too thick. This may block pores and cause acne or make existing acne worse.

She said not to sleep with your makeup on and to wash it off as quickly as you can.

If you have a reaction, don't hesitate to call your doctor.

"If you have a reaction that's an itchy, blistery rash, see your doctor and have them take a look at it and see if you could be allergic," Piliang said. "You might need a topical medication."

Piliang said most skin reactions to makeup will remedy themselves.
