Domestic dispute leaves 2 shot, 1 dead

Ex-boyfriend breaks in, shoots current boyfriend

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – One man is dead and another is hospitalized after a woman reported a burglary to police, which turned into a shooting.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office say the shooting happened late Friday night on Gibson Road near Beach Boulevard and Art Museum Drive on the Southside.

People who live in the neighborhood say their sense of security is now shaken.

When police arrived, they found two men shot, one dead. The man who was killed was later identified as 34-year-old Nicholas Anderson Hare.

According to police, the woman called 911 reporting that her house was being broken into by an ex-boyfriend.  As the woman was reporting the break-in, her call took a turn when she said her ex-boyfriend entered the home and started shooting.

"Just shock. It's a real quiet neighborhood. I never thought something like this would happen here," said Erik Smith who lives in the area.

The ex-boyfriend shot Hare, her current boyfriend, killing him. Police said the ex-boyfriend then shot himself.

The ex-boyfriend is in critical condition at UF Health.

"I'm just completely shocked at this. Something like this has never happened like this, the last 11 years that I've lived here," Ted Hornoi-Centerwall who also lives in the area.

Erik Smith says he knew the woman that lived in the home where the shooting happened. Smith described her as "outgoing, friendly, caring."

He says the shooting has now changed his thoughts about living in this area.

Police searched the area to try and find witnesses. Right now, police believe the woman is the only one who saw the shooting.

People who live around the area are just thinking about the family of the man killed.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this troubling time," said Smith.

Police say this is an active and ongoing investigation.
