JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

Save Jax Libraries drew dozens of people of all ages to a rally Tuesday morning in support of the library funding straw ballot on the Florida Primary ballot.

Frustrated that Jacksonville public libraries' budget has seen 41 percent reduction since 2005, the group gathered more than 25,000 voter petitions to get this measure on the ballot. It is a non-binding referendum on whether the Florida Legislature should authorize an independent Duval County library district that would have taxing authority to generate its own funding.

If the district were authorized by the Legislature, another vote would be required for Duval County voters before the district would be created.

Alachua and Orange counties have such independent districts to fund their libraries.

Tuesday's rally was held outside the Downtown library.
