Dr. Oz visits recently separated conjoined twins

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Conner and Carter, the conjoined twins who were recently separated at Wolfson Children's Hospital, have gotten their share of the limelight lately, working their way into the hearts of people across the country.

Both boys are doing well. Conner is healing along quickly, while Carter was just in surgery Thursday to fix a broken suture and a few other things, though his parents remain positive and hopeful their baby boys will be healthy in no time.

A recent visit from Dr. Oz, who happened to be in Jacksonville Thursday, helped out a bit too.

Oz was able to meet Conner and hold his little hand, and though he couldn't meet Carter, who was in surgery, Oz said Conner is looking pretty good right now.

"He's got little thunder thighs!" Oz exclaimed "Look at those legs! Nice and pink!"

Michelle Brantley, the mother of Conner and Carter, said when she went to find out if she was pregnant last year, she got a double surprise.

"She did the ultrasound and she's like, 'Um I'm seeing two heads!' I said, 'What? My baby has two heads?' and she said, 'No, I'm seeing two babies!' I said, 'Twins?, She said, 'yea!'" Brantley said.

Not your ordinary twins though. Michelle Brantley and Bryan Mirabal, the boys' parents, found out they were conjoined five months into the pregnancy. Last Monday the risky surgery to separate them was a success.

"I was scared that one of them couldn't make it," Brantley said. "We're blessed it happened to us, because they made it through a lot."

Carter was in surgery for hours to fix a gallbladder issue and to have a split suture sewn up, but plans for the future are already on the minds of Brantley and Mirabal's.

"That they get to come home and live their life normal, go to school, beat up their older brother," Brantley said. "Putting them in their crib together, putting them in the bouncers. Watching them play. Just do normal stuff. Ain't that funny how we aspire to be normal? When we're sick, being normal is plenty good!"

The struggle is far from over, especially for Carter, so the family has set up a GoFund me account to help cover the cost.
