ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -

A car went into a retention pond in St. Augustine Friday afternoon, and the driver was able to escape without injury, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.

The accident happened in the 1900 block of U.S. 1 South about 4:30 p.m.

A bystander saw what happened and helped the driver out of the car as it was sinking, deputies said.

"In a few minutes, the water began to fill up the car," said Pastor Samuel McBurnett, who ran to help. "We had to actually pull him through the window, but the car was sinking fast."

The car was completely submerged.

It's unclear what caused the accident.
