JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

Duval County school officials in Jacksonville have fired a physical education teacher who is accused of punching a female middle school student in the face.

Michael Green, 39, was fired earlier this month. He was arrested following the incident on a charge of child abuse, and a hearing is set for Thursday.

According to school district documents and a police report, Green, who weighs 270 pounds, hit the Eugene Butler Middle School student with his fist after she pushed him in the chest while he was trying to remove her from the gymnasium after she was cursing and shouting at another teacher.

The student had refused to do push-ups, according to the police report.

Superintendent Nikolai Vitti called the incident "excessively egregious" and says the district moved that day to have Green fired. He says there has to be a "zero-tolerance policy on hitting students."

The student had no significant injuries and was back in school.

Green was released from jail on his own recognizance.
