Federal investigators say a cache of C4 explosives found near a Panhandle railroad appear to have been stolen from the military.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives told the Northwest Florida Daily News that agents are working to determine the origin of the explosives and how they were stolen.

The Florida Fire Marshal's Office told the newspaper that a special forces soldier awaiting trial on domestic violence-related charges is being investigated in connection with the missing explosives. Investigators say explosives were found in the soldier's home on Dec. 29. The soldier was arrested for domestic battery on Dec. 15 and the charges were later upgraded to attempted murder. He has been in custody since his arrest.

Investigators say the explosives were not rigged to detonate.
