MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -

A former University of Miami football player is in stable condition after a car crash on a Miami Beach highway.

A Jackson Memorial Hospital spokeswoman says JoJo Nicolas' condition was upgraded from critical Wednesday.

The Miami Herald reports that Hurricanes football coach Al Golden joined JoJo Nicolas' family and friends Tuesday at the Ryder Trauma Center. Golden said Nicolas is "a big part of our U family and all of us are pulling for him."

Nicolas played for the Hurricanes from 2007 to 2011. In 2012, he briefly signed with the New York Giants as a rookie free agent.

Nicolas tweeted early Tuesday that he was celebrating his birthday at a South Beach club. Hours later, the car he was driving crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer as he left the beach.

The crash stopped traffic on the causeway for hours.
