FDOT starts project to improve I-95, Butler Boulevard interchange

Florida Department of Transportation begins $67 million project

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Florida Department of Transportation said it is starting a $67 million project this week to improve traffic flow at the Interstate 95 and Butler Boulevard interchange.

Gov. Rick Scott visited the site in February 2013 to announce the project would be advanced due to heavy congestion slowing access between the two major highways, according to FDOT.

FDOT said it then hired SEMA Construction to construct a new flyover ramp to:

  • Eliminate the traffic signal from I-95 south to east Butler Boulevard
  • Widen Butler Boulevard between Philips Highway and I-95
  • Improve the connection from I-95 north to west Butler Boulevard
  • Construct overpasses to improve the merge at Butler Boulevard near Belfort Road.

The improvements are designed to reduce congestion and provide quicker access to hospitals, businesses and residential areas along Butler Boulevard, FDOT said.

The first phase of construction will include tree removal to pave the way for necessary utility work, construction of drainage ponds and noise walls at select locations.

FDOT said lane closures after 8 p.m. may be encountered during the project.

More details on the project, including traffic impacts, will be provided at a construction open house on Jan. 21. FDOT said the public will be able to stop by anytime between 5 and 7 p.m.
