Finding good homes for dogs in their senior years

Jacksonville charity allows senior dogs to live their last years with dignity

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Anyone with pets knows how difficult it can be when they start reaching the end. Well imagine those dogs that don't have anyone to care for them in their old age. A lot of times, they end up being put down when they still have good years left.

That's where "The Old Dog House" comes in. It is a charity in Jacksonville dedicated to finding homes for senior dogs where they can live their last few years with dignity.

Kim Stordahl opened the charity in 2006 after working at the Humane Society. At the time, it wasn't a "no kill" shelter.

"The older dogs just seemed to get overlooked. They never made it out to the adoption floor. They were adoptable, they were just old," she said.

The Old Dog House isn't a shelter, it's a charity that helps place older dogs in foster or forever homes. They take in dogs from all over the state and currently have five that need to be adopted.

"Here at the old dog house we say every dog deserves to grow old. That's the bottom line," Stordahl said.

If you can't adopt a dog, there are definitely other ways you can help. Donations go to make sure the senior animals live out their last days with dignity, and in a home where they are loved.

"It's not fair to be chosen to be euthanized just because you're old," added Stordahl.
