Police say man's body found in creek

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Police say a body found under Atlantic Boulevard bridge just after 8 a.m. Thursday was likely a transient and foul play is not suspected.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office closed one eastbound lane of Atlantic just east of University Boulevard blocked while authorities recovered the a body found in Silversmith Creek.

Homicide Sgt. Michael Paul said the body was naked and face down in the mud. There was no obvious signs of trauma.  It will be up to the medical examiner to determine the cause of death.

A construction worker who works nearby said he saw the man alive and well under the same bridge Wednesday. He said it appeared the man, who appeared to be in his 40s, lived there.

Detectives say the woman who first spotted the man's body believes she knew him. Officers were going around to places where homeless are known to sleep in the area trying to find out more and possibly identify the man.

Police activity kept one eastbound lane of Atlantic Boulevard closed for about two hours.
