SOUTH DAYTONA, Fla. -

Police officers fatally shot an armed man suspected of sexual assault at a South Daytona tanning salon.

The shooting occurred Tuesday afternoon a few minutes after a hold-up alarm was activated at Hot Tans. Dispatchers also received a report of a sexual assault about the same time.

Police Chief Mike Chitwood told the Daytona Beach News-Journal that the salon's front door was locked. So some officers stayed at the front of the building while others went to the back. He says the victim ran toward the front door with "the bad guy chasing right behind her with a gun."

Chitwood says 28-year-old Cheyne Russell Pinkney, of Ponte Vedra Beach, saw police and attempted to run out the back door. Two officers fired at Pinkney.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating.
