Florida's unemployment website malfunctioning

$63M site not working

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Mac Reynolds has been looking for a job for the last six months. He was laid off and hasn't filed for unemployment, but even if he tried to file now, the state of Florida's new $63 million unemployment site isn't working.

Reynolds was stunned when Channel 4 told him that the site wasn't working.

"That's wrong man, that's bad. Because a lot of people have families to take care of and bills to pay. That's a bad thing," said Reynolds.

"If the codes are written that poorly to begin with, it's like starting all over," said Design Extensions' Jay Owen. "There are so many scenarios. Is there something that's a quick fix or a glitch? The White House keeps calling it a glitch on the healthcare side. I haven't heard as much about the state. Usually there's a glitch when it doesn't work -- a major infrastructure problem on the server sides or how the code was constructed in the first place," said Owen.

Florida's Department of Economic Opportunity issued Channel 4 a statement about the problems Monday night:

"Our best estimate is that only a small overall percentage of claimants are experiencing technical problems. We want to reassure these claimants that they will not lose any benefits to which they are entitled."
