MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -

A former University of Miami football player is in critical condition after the car he was driving rear-ended a semi-truck on MacArthur Causeway near Miami Beach.

Police spokeswoman Vivian Hernandez said Tuesday that 24-year-old JoJo Nicolas was traveling westbound on the causeway just after 5 a.m. when his Lexus collided with the rear of the truck.

Hernandez said Nicolas was taken Jackson Memorial Hospital and remains in critical condition. He was the only occupant in the vehicle.

He played for the Hurricanes from 2007 to 2011.

All westbound lanes on the causeway were closed while authorities investigate the crash.
