JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority is seeking federal TIGER Grant assistance to help fund three strategic enhancements to the Skyway.

Those components include the following:

  • The Skyway will be extended to the Brooklyn area for passenger service using 1/3 mile of existing guideway (currently used for operations and maintenance), adding 740 feet of guideway and a new station.
  • Skyway system improvements would include a critical mid-life overhaul of trains; updated and more energy-efficient propulsion system and safety improvements.
  • And a formal bike share program at 30 locations with 300 bicycles will be implemented at Skyway stations, as well as at strategic locations within the downtown and surrounding neighborhoods.

JTA said it hopes to hear by September or October if it'll receive the grant.
