Hit-and-run driver sought in double fatal crash

Troopers investigating Orange County crash

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Florida Highway Patrol troopers are investigating a hit-and-run accident that killed two people Sunday around 7 p.m.

Troopers said a woman was driving a beige Toyota through an intersection on Balboa Drive when a black Volkswagen SUV ran a red light, striking the Toyota.

"I turned to the side, heard somebody revving up their engine," said Jowell Melendez. "Somebody ran the red light, smacked right into this gold car."

The driver of the Toyota died on the scene of the crash. Her passenger was transported to the hospital where that person died as well.

Troopers said the man driving the SUV ran away on foot. A woman who has been identified as Shane Joseph, 24, was riding with the man. She was taken to the hospital. She claims the SUV belongs to her but that she didn't know the driver.

Officials are now searching for the man who fled the scene. He is described as black with short hair and was said to be wearing a purple shirt.

The driver could face charges of vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a crash involving death.
