Honda announced Wednesday it is expanding a recall because a defective inflator could explode in a crash, sending debris and shrapnel into the passenger compartment.

Last month, several companies using the inflator recalled vehicles in Hawaii, Florida, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, saying that high humidity appeared to make the problem more likely to happen.

The automaker announced it was adding 1 million vehicles to the recall, including those in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Texas.

The vehicles affected by the recall are:

  • 4-cylinder 2001-2007 Honda Accord
  • 2001-2002 Honda Accord V6
  • 2001-2005 Honda Civic
  • 2002-2006 Honda CR-V
  • 2003-2011 Honda Element
  • 2002-2004 Honda Odyssey
  • 2003-2007 Honda Pilot
  • 2006 Honda Ridgeline
  • 2003-2006 Acura MDX
  • 2002-2003 Acura TL
  • 2002-2003 Acura CL
