ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -

James “JC” Costeira has been appointed fire chief of the City of St. Augustine, St. Augustine City Manager John Regan announced Thursday.

Costeira, who will replace recently retired Mike Arnold, has been with the fire department for over 27 years holding the rank of captain since 2008.

“The St. Augustine Fire Department has a long tradition of total commitment to the people of our city and I am confident that JC will continue that tradition,” said Regan in making the announcement. “We have in JC a person who already knows the department, his fellow firefighters and the community they serve. We are all very fortunate to have this level of skill, knowledge and commitment already in the department and ready to step into this leadership position.”

Costeira, who grew up in St. Augustine, finished high school at St. Joseph’s Academy, is the son of James Costeira who served the city as a commissioner in the late 1980s.

His appointment as fire chief is effective immediately.
