JFRD: 2 firefighters hurt escaping fire

Residents inside Northwest Jacksonville home not injured

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Two Jacksonville firefighters were hospitalized after battling a house fire Thursday night off of Old Kings Road.

Jacksonville Fire-Rescue responded to the 6500 block of Utsey Road at 8 p.m. with reports of flames through the roof of a two-story home in the area.

JFRD told Channel 4 that two firefighters had to be transported from the scene with injuries -- one for smoke inhalation and one who jumped from a second-story window.  One was taken to UF Health Jacksonville and the second transferred to UF Health in Gainesville, but both were out of the hospital by late Friday afternoon.

All nine residents inside the home made it out safety, but the home and all their belongings were lost in the fire.  The Red Cross is assisting the family with emergency housing.

The State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire, but neighbors say the family used space heaters to keep warm.
