Lake City crash
COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. -

The Florida Highway Patrol says a driver ran a stop sign Saturday night south of Lake City, causing a crash that critically injured another driver and killed her 12-year-old passenger.

The crash happened after 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of State Road 47 and S.W. King Street.   Troopers say Joshua Nolan Orndorff, 31, Tallahassee, drove his Honda S2000 sports car through the intersection without stopping and struck a Dodge pickup truck that was going north on S.R. 47.

Orndorff's car went off the road and struck a utility pole.  The pickup truck left the road and overturned, ejecting both driver Norma Jean Schenck, 53, and her passenger, 12-year-old Megan Nicole Rigdon, both of Fort White.

Troopers say the child was pronounced dead at the scene.  Both drivers were taken by air ambulance to UF Health in Gainesville, where Schenck was in critical condition and Orndorff was in serious condition.

According to the FHP report, blood alcohol testing was conducted on Orndorff and charges are pending.  Troopers say neither occupant of the pickup was wearing seat belts.

The accident and subsequent investigation kept lanes of S.R. 47 closed for hours.
