Police: Violent sex offender pulled gun at DUI checkpoint

LAKE CITY, Fla. – The officer who shot and killed a man in March when he pulled a gun on police at a DUI checkpoint in Lake City has been cleared in the shooting.

Police said Jimmy Barker (pictured below), 60, a violent sex offender from Louisville, Tenn., was driving a black, Dodge pickup truck when he pulled out a handgun and pointed it at Officer Michael Lee. Lee was able to grab hold of it.

During the struggle, the officer reached for his own gun and shot Barker, investigators said.

Barker was convicted in three different rape cases, one in 1997, 1998 and 1999, in Tennessee.

He was also charged with DUI last year.

The State Attorney's Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement are investigated the case.
