Fire burns classroom of vacant church

At least 20 JFRD units respond to Harlow Boulevard scene

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A classroom of a former Episcopal church on the Westside caught fire early Friday morning, drawing a large response from firefighters to prevent the blase from spreading to the sanctuary.

The Church of the Epiphany is located on Harlow Boulevard, near the intersection of 103rd Street and Interstate 295 is currently vacant and the property is for sale.

"The smoke was all the way to the red light on 103rd," said neighbor Dennis Paul.

Jacksonville Fire-Rescue spokesman Tom Francis said about 20 units responded to the two-alarm fire because it involved a 5,000-square-foot structure.

"The state fire marshals office is out here to take a look at things and we hope to have some sort of conclusion before the morning is over as to what caused this particular fire," Francis said.
