For 20 years now leaders said poor drainage systems along Third and Eighth streets in Jacksonville Beach have been plaguing residents and businesses.

Mayor Charlie Latham, along with Sen. Audrey Gibson and others, announced funding for the project at City Hall. They estimate the construction will cost more than $30 million.

Officials said the plan is to find the most efficient way to improve the problems for people living in the area.

"Certainly it's going to impact the quality of life for all of those residents in Jacksonville Beach and certainly those tourists that we want to continue to come here," said Gibson.

"I can honestly tell you this has been a sterling example of state and local officials working together to take care of our constituents," Latham said.

The design for the project will start in July 2016 with full construction underway by 2017.
