Local state rep says there will be ‘massive teacher cuts’ at Duval County schools, blames expansion of voucher program

The school district has not announced any cuts

DUVAL COUNTY, Fla. – Local State Rep. Angie Nixon said there will be massive teacher cuts at Duval County public schools.

The school district has not announced any cuts like the ones Nixon claimed.

“We are looking into it and will follow up,” DCPS officials told News4JAX.

In a post on X that Nixon made on Tuesday, she blamed House Bill 1 that was passed last year on the teacher cuts she says will happen next school year.

“Just heard there are about to be massive teacher cuts at DCPS,” Nixon wrote.

House Bill 1 expanded the school voucher program to all Florida students.

It allows families to choose the school where their student will attend and it also includes homeschooling.

According to an analysis of the bill:

  • Students receiving vouchers increased by nearly 50% in its first year
  • 120,000 more students are receiving vouchers this school year compared to last school year

In a follow-up post on X, Nixon claimed the following jobs will be cut and gave an estimate of how many there would be:

  • 466 basic teachers
  • 52 teachers
  • 16 counselors
  • 19 assistant Principals
  • 74 paraprofessionals

On social media, Nixon did not say where she got those numbers or where she heard about any potential teacher cuts.

Again, DCPS has not announced any planned teacher cuts.
