In July 2009, Faulk's grandson found his grandmother brutally beaten and shot to death inside her Shellcracker Road home. The victim's dog was also found deceased, lying on top of the victim's body.

The investigation revealed that Breeden and his two co-defendants broke into Faulk's home to commit a burglary. Several items were taken from the home, including a large television. In the midst of the burglary, Faulk was shot multiple times in the head and struck with a concrete block.
