Man arrested in killing at Northside apartment complex

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 37-year-old Jacksonville man is charged with murder in the stabbing death of a man found dead at a Northside apartment complex Sunday.

Eric Carpenter was arrested in the killing of 35-year-old William Nesmith at Blodgett Villas, off West Fourth Street, just north of downtown.

Police said Nesmith's body was found in an open area of the complex.

They said the killing happened at a party to celebrate the release from jail of Carpenter's brother, who'd previously dated 36-year-old Shakia Long. She was in an on-again, off-again relationship with Nesmith, police said.

They said Long and Carpenter's brother were talking when Nesmith got into an argument with them, and police said that's when Carpenter stabbed Nesmith.

Long is also in jail, charged with tampering with evidence. Police said she helped Carpenter clean up the bloody scene and move the body into a common area of the complex.
