JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Police fatally shot a man Tuesday night following a 90-minute standoff at a Southside mobile home park.
According to Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Chief Tom Hackney, the man got into an argument with his stepfather and stabbed the older man before barricading himself inside a home at the Countryside Village Mobile Home Park on Beach Boulevard. Officers said the stepson told them he had a gun, and those officers called in the SWAT team, established a perimeter around the trailer and began evacuating nearby homes.
Police said the man slipped out the back door about 8:30 p.m., began screaming and pointed a handgun at an officer. Hackney said three other officers fired their department-issued AR-15 rifles, hitting the suspect several times in the chest.
The man died at the scene. The man's stepfather was taken to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center with non life-threatening injuries and was in stable but critical condition.
No officers or residents were injured.
"This is somebody who was an apparent suicide-by-cop," Hackney said. "You had an individual who set out earlier this evening with an ambush attack on one of his family members, told the officers as he barricaded himself that he had a gun and then exited the trailer pointing the gun at these officers, obviously with the attempt to have these officers take his life."
The man's name and other details were expected to be released Wednesday.
The three officers who were involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave, which is standard as police-involved shootings are investigated.
