Man drowns in canal

MIAMI, Fla. -

Authorities are investigating the death of a man who jumped into a canal in North Miami Beach wearing handcuffs.

Sunny Isles Beach Police had stopped the man late Saturday afternoon during a traffic stop. According to police reports, the man escaped from officers and fled on foot, darting across the busy Biscayne Boulevard into the nearby water. The report said officers jumped in to rescue him.

Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue officers arrived and helped pull the man out. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Miami-Dade County Homicide bureau is investigating the death. The man's identity was not immediately released.
