Man gets 40 years in 16-month-old girl's death

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. – A 37-year-old Clay County man was sentenced Friday afternoon to 40 years in prison for the death of a 16-month-old girl.

Torey Jenkins pleaded no contest in July to a charge of second-degree murder.

In September 2009, Jenkins was babysitting Destiny Patterson while her mother was attending nursing school at Keiser University. When the mother returned home, she discovered that the child was not breathing.

Jenkins dropped them off at a nearby fire station and then fled to Tennessee. The child was taken to a hospital, where doctors discovered she had multiple blunt force impacts to her head causing severe brain injuries that ultimately resulted in her death.
