ARCHER, Fla. -

A 59-year-old man tending to a car just towed out of a ditch in southern Alachua County died after being struck by a car trying to pass, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said Garrott Cutler of Cross Creek was removing chains from a Chrysler Sebring after it was pulled back onto State Road 121 about 8:21 p.m. That vehicle was blocking the southbound and part of the northbound lane when a Chevrolet Malibu driven by Landayle Jones, 24, of Gainesville, tried to get around the blockage.

The passing car struck Cutler and the left rear of the Sebring.

Cutler died at the scene. A 19-year-old listed as the driver of the Sebring was not injured.

The FHP report said no charges were expected in the crash.
