JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

Sandy Vernell Alston Jr., 46, was sentenced Tuesday afternoon to mandatory life in prison on one count of Sexual Battery on a Child Under 12.

Alston was also sentenced to five years for one count of Child Abuse – Impregnating a Child Under 16 and to 30 years for one count of Sexual Battery on a Child Over 12.

Alston was convicted of these charges in January 2014.

In 2013, authorities learned of sexual activity that had taken place between the defendant and the child victim.

The investigation revealed that Alston had sexually battered and forced the young girl to have sex with him on multiple occasions since 1999. During this period of time, Alston also impregnated the victim, who was then under the age of 16.

Alston's sentences will run consecutively.
