JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

A Jacksonville man was sentenced Monday to a minimum of 40 years in prison for attempted murder in the second degree.

The State Attorney's Office said Joey Terrell Atwater, 30, was playing cards at a Lenox Avenue residence with several others in September 2013 when an argument escalated. Atwater pulled out a gun and shot Gerry Richardson, 39, in the chest.

Richardson later recovered from his injuries.

Atwater was convicted of the crime in June.
