March Madness vasectomies

March Madness is not only taking place on the basketball court. Many urologists are overrun by patients this time of year. Cleveland Clinic Urologist Dr. Edmund Sabanegh says a lot of guys have their vasectomies done this week and then lay around all weekend watching basketball - doctor's orders.
"Typically they should take it easy on a couch. They will have an ice bag, for about 6 hours on and off, and just not doing anything strenuous for a short period of time," he said.
During a vasectomy, tubing that carries sperm is interrupted. "No-Incision" techniques help to make the procedure quicker and more comfortable, but there is still some icing involved afterwards.
Guys are typically told to stay in a reclined position while they're icing. And it just so happens, that's a good way to watch basketball, too. Sabanegh sees the number of vasectomies increase around other big sporting events as well.
"We see a lot of men who have held off scheduling this until a time of year when they know that they can have some down time when they can watch TV or do something else of interest and we tend to see surges around March Madness for the tournament and we tend to see surges around the Super Bowl," he said.
Sabanegh adds that the procedure is very effective, only takes about 15 minutes, and afterward the recovery is about 24 hours - just long enough to relax and enjoy some great college hoops.
