'Drive Safely' memorial sign honors 14-year-old killed walking to school

FLEMING ISLAND, Fla. – A 14-year-old girl killed walking to her bus stop earlier this year has been honored with a memorial sign.

The "Drive Safely" sign recognizes Gianna Asencio and is placed in the spot where she was killed.

The family of the Fleming Island teenager planted a palm tree in her honor after her death near her favorite spot at the neighborhood swimming pool.

Her parents tied a purple ribbon around the Silver Date Sylvester palm tree. Purple was Gianna's favorite color.

"We would drive down to Florida from New York and as soon we started hitting around South Carolina and she saw the palm trees, she would get excited," said Jason Asencio, Gianna's father. "So we thought this would be the best way to remember her."

Pat's Nursery in Fleming Island donated and planted the tree, surrounded by purple petunias and red ties to represent Gianna and her two surviving sisters.

In front of the memorial tree, a plaque donated by Logo Express honors Gianna, who is remembered for her smile.
