Mother of cyclist hit, killed on Monument Road speaks out

Mother says her son's organs were donated to others

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The mother of a 20-year-old man hit and killed by a car in the Regency area is trying to come to grips with his death.

Joshua Chitty, 20, was riding across Monument Road in Regency on Tuesday night when he was struck by a white Impala. He died later at the hospital.

Remembering Chitty, Cynthia Shults said at 10 weeks premature, her son was a miracle and a fighter from the get-go.

Chitty played the drums by ear, as he had just completed Job Corps and wanted to work for Homeland Security. He was also a leader of two youth groups.

Shults told Channel 4 when Chitty got his driver's license, which took several tries, he was actually more excited about being an organ donor.

Now, Shults said her son helped save five other lives. A 54-year-old North Carolina man received Chitty's heart and a lung.

Doctors were also able to donate Chitty's pancreas, liver, tissue, cornea and intestines.

Shults said that even leaving this earth, Chitty's continuing to be a miracle.

"To miss him would mean that he's gone," said Shults. "He's not gone forever, it's just a space in time."
