New renderings for the Jacksonville Landing detail the market-based, multi-use approach to reinvigorating downtown.
The renderings were released by Sleiman Enterprises. The plan by this group is to spend $11.8 million and change the public areas.
Under the proposal, the public access along the river will increase from 20,000 square feet today to 89,000 square feet. The new open space will support festivals and events, continuing the Landing’s frequent use as a host for major public activities. Open space will be created from the river to Laura Street, allowing more connectivity and new view corridors to the St. Johns.
The apartments are estimated to bring 500 new residents living downtown, in upscale apartments featuring rooftop pools, and amenities that overlook the St Johns River.
The plan includes over 950 parking spaces, 300 apartment units, and up to 60,000 square feet of restaurant and retail space. It is anticipated a high end, boutique hotel will anchor the southwest corner of the project.
"This is a game changer for downtown, look at that design, it’s beautiful! It follows the national urban living trend that we’ve seen work with massive success in Charlotte, Atlanta, Raleigh, Nashville, Orlando, and Austin," said Toney Sleiman. "The redevelopment of the Landing will help energize Jacksonville, putting it on par with other NFL cities that enjoy pro football and a vibrant downtown.
"It will allow our businesses to compete with other cities for young professional talent. I can’t tell you how much we appreciate the hard work of the city and community leaders to get the project to this point, but there is still a lot of work ahead."
Mayor Alvin Brown has called for $20 million in improvements from the Landing to Metropolitan Park.
The next step in the Landing proposal is approval from city council.
