ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -

Only one student was on board a stopped St. Johns County school bus when it was struck by an SUV Wednesday morning on State Road 13 near the intersection of State Road 16.

There were no injuries in the crash.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the bus was stopped in the northbound lane with lights flashing at 6:35 a.m. when a southbound Chevrolet Blazer driven by 20-year-old Jesse Helms, of Middleburg, veered onto the right shoulder to avoid slowing traffic. The SUV struck a mailbox, overcorrected and crossed the road, hitting the left side of the stopped school bus.

Neither Helms nor the driver or lone 13-year-old passenger on the bus were hurt.

According to the FHP report, Helms was charged with careless driving.
