One Spark needs volunteers for festival

Creators who have come up with ideas in art, innovation, music science and technology will showcase their innovations over five days at the world's largest crowd-funding festival.

One Spark 2014 is gearing up for its biggest year with 56 percent more creators than last year.

This means there will be a lot more to see and also a lot more to do, so organizers need your help with volunteers for the event.

Organizers say it will take hundreds of people to make the festival a success this year. And there’s also some incentive to being a part of it.

“You get a lot of cool stuff like a One Spark t-shirt, a bag, a water bottle, pins and you also -- if you work 20 hours or more get to come to our volunteer recognition celebration,” said One Spark Volunteer Service Manager, Meredith O’Malley-Johnson.

One Spark 2014 will take over downtown April 9th-13th, and the festival is shaping up to be even bigger and better than last year. To make it go off without a hitch, organizers need hundreds of people to volunteer their time.

“We need at least 800 people on the ground at the festival this year. We have a lot more voting and information kiosks, so to help people vote, we need two to four volunteers at each one of those, each shift so that’s our biggest need is customer service and registration,” said O’Malley-Johnson.

There are seven different roles you can choose from this year, so volunteer coordinator, Meredith O’Malley-Johnson said there’s something for everybody.

“Creator Liaison is a new one this year, where you get to work directly with the creators and make sure that they have everything they need if they’re having any issues, and just be customer service support for One Spark,” said O’Malley-Johnson.

To be a volunteer, there is an hour and a half mandatory training session offered the last week in March and the first week of April. Once you complete that, you can sign up for whatever shifts you want during the festival.

“The minimum shift is three to four hours and it’s very flexible. Everything is self-scheduling on our volunteer hub,” said O-Malley-Johnson.
