Monument Road crash scene
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

One of two men critically injured in a single-vehicle crash on Monument Road late Thursday morning has died, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Police said 20-year-old Mikel Martinez was a passenger in a Dodge Neon heading northbound on Monument near Oak Water Drive just after 11 a.m. He was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries and died of his injuries on Saturday, according to police.

Investigators said the 19-year-old driving was traveling at a high speed when he lost control of the car. Police say the vehicle traveled across the road, jumped the concrete curb, continued across the concrete sidewalk and struck a wooden telephone pole.

Police said neither occupant of the car was wearing a seat belt. They said there was no indication that drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

Police said from the evidence at the scene, the distance the car traveled and the amount of damage from the impact with the pole, it appears speed was a factor in the crash.
