Person hit by 2 vehicles on Southside

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Jacksonville man is in critical condition after he was struck by two vehicles on Philips Highway early Thursday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers identified the victim as 45-year-old Adriatik Novaku.

They said the crash happened about 1:30 a.m. on Philips southbound, just south of Bowden Road.

Novaku was walking along Philips Highway in the southbound travel lanes when a Ford Mustang struck him, troopers said.

The car was driven by 22-year-old Zachary McReynolds, who had a 20-year-old passenger in the car with him, according to FHP.

After the collision, Novaku was knocked to the ground, where he was hit again and run over by a Ford Explorer, troopers said.

The SUV was being driven by 24-year-old Melanie Hess, who had a 25-year-old passenger in the car with her, according to FHP.

Novaku was transported to UF Health Jacksonville with life-threatening injuries.

No one else was hurt. Both vehicles stopped after the crash and are cooperating with troopers, according to FHP.

Troopers closed all southbound lanes of Philips Highway at University Boulevard for several hours while they investigated. The highway reopened about 5:15 a.m.

FHP said charges may be filed pending the outcome of the investigation. There was no word if alcohol was involved in the crash.
