Pickup truck crashes through brick house

No one home at time

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Westside homeowner said he is thankful he wasn't there when a pickup truck crashed through a brick wall of his home Thursday morning.

The crash happened happened about 10:30 a.m. in the 1600 block of Mt. Vernon Drive on the Westside.

Witnesses said 20-year-old man who lived in a home a few houses away crashed the truck through the side of the garage. They said a relative rescued the man, who was bleeding from his head.

The homeowner, a Naval officer, was at work at the time. He said he has insurance and was talking to the driver's insurance agency.

Jacksonville firefighters arrived but did not transport the driver.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is investigating. An officer said the man told them he "blacked out."

Witnesses said they heard the engine revving and tires squealing.

"I was in the backyard and I was cutting the yard, and I smelled something kind of burning and I didn't know what it was," said witness Caleb Thompson. "I didn't think nothing of it, thought it was on my mower or something. Then I hear sirens and come outside and there's a truck inside the house."

The pickup was pulled out by a tow truck.
