LA PAZ, Mexico -

A Florida couple celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary got quite the surprise on a fishing trip: a pod of whales decided to go along with them.

Rich and Laura Howard, of Lutz, were diving off the coast of La Paz, Mexico when the encounter happened.

Rich said as he and his wife headed back to shore on their boat after a dive, a pod of 20 killer whales decided to follow them.

Video captured the whales following them, playing in the boat's wake for an hour.

WFLA-TV reports that the whales had been spotted only a couple times in the past decade.

"It's really something that reminds me of this wonderful experience that we were so blessed and lucky to have happen to us," Laura told reporters.

The captain on the boat said he's never seen the whales display this behavior before.
