LEESBURG, Fla. -

Police in central Florida say a young girl drowned in a neighbor's swimming pool while their mother slept.

Orlando's WESH reported 3-year-old Jayonna Brown left home with her 4-year-old brother on Thursday and entered their neighbor's unfenced yard.

Capt. Rob Hicks says the young girl climbed into the above-ground pool, using a pool ladder. Hicks says the boy realized his sister needed help and ran next door.

A maintenance worker pulled the child from the pool and called 911.

Rescue crews tried to resuscitate the little girl, but she was pronounced dead at a hospital a short time later.

The mother of the children, Chante Anthony, eventually woke up and discovered the children missing.

The Florida Department of Children and Families and detectives are investigating.
