Police ID remains found on Fernandina Beach

Police: Remains are those of swimmer reported missing

FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla – The Fernandina Beach Police Department confirmed Tuesday that human remains found on the beach in the early morning hours of June 2 have been identified as 34-year-old Steve Shaw of Valdosta, Georgia.

Shaw was presumed drowned on May 30 near Beach Access No. 13. Shaw went into the ocean when his niece and nephew and two other teenagers began struggling in rough surf. The teens were rescued, but Shaw never resurfaced.

Shaw was considered a good swimmer and was in good physical condition, police said.

The remains were found by a patrol officer at 5:10 a.m. June 2 in the surf near the 600 block of South Fletcher Avenue.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement conducted DNA testing to determine that the remains were those of Shaw.
