News4Jax spoke with Cmdr. Tiffany Layson with the Atlantic Beach Police Department who said that residents should not to be complacent.

"Since about Oct. 20 we've had four or five different nights that there have been numerous vehicle break-ins," said Layson.

The past two weeks have been very busy for the officers in Atlantic Beach-- as they work to find the culprit or culprits behind a string of 15 car burglaries.

"We're reaching out to the public, not only to remind everyone to please lock your car doors, but also to ask them if anyone has seen anything suspicious," Layson said.

Police said the items taken from the vehicles have been: sunglasses, money, even sets of car keys allowing the thieves to steal two cars. But the most concerning item stolen was a firearm.

"It's very concerning. We don't know who has it and what they're planning to do with it. Sometimes they take those types of things and pawn them. Sometimes they take them and who knows what they're going to do with it or who they're going to give it to. So of course, we want to get that back to find out who did this," Layson said.

Police said the crimes are all happening between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

As of Wednesday evening, there is no suspect description and investigators are asking for surveillance video from people in the area to try and track down the thieves.

Anyone with information is asked to call Atlantic Beach Police Department at 904-247-5859.
